The CEO of a local homebuilding company has purchased a two-building office complex on Turtle Creek in Dallas with plans to hold the property for a future residential high-rise project.

Randall Van Wolfswinkel, CEO of First Texas Homes, bought the former Republic Insurance buildings at 2727 Turtle Creek Blvd. from an affiliate of Trammell Crow Residential. Crow Residential had owned the 5.5-acre property since 2005 and had designed two residential towers for it.

But the recession and housing downturn put an end to those plans.

Construction has been completed on the last major condominium tower being built in Dallas’ Uptown district.

The Tower Residences at The Ritz-Carlton is a 23-story building located at Cedar Springs Road and Pearl Street. The high-rise has been under construction for about two years and is adjacent to the Ritz-Carlton Dallas hotel.

The luxury residential building contains 95 units and is about two-thirds reserved by buyers, the developer says. A mid-priced unit in the tower costs more than $1 million.

Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX made a resurgence this week as it once again took number one in TicketNews’s exclusive venues rankings for the week ending Sunday, August 16. The Stadium, home to the popular Dallas Cowboys, (at number three in this week’s Top Sports Events rankings), is scheduled also to host a game between the Texas Longhorns (at number five in Top Sports this week) and the North Carolina Tar Heels in December. Surely boosting the numbers this week is an appearance by Paul McCartney set for later this week and an upcoming date for U2 (at number four in TicketNews’s Top Concert Events) in October. Dallas Cowboys Stadium finished the week with a power score of 3.14.

Ticket sales for the long running hit musical Wicked kept the Gershwin Theatre in New York City strong in the rankings this week, up three to the number two position. With a power score of 2.67, the Gershwin benefits from the show’s ability to bring in impressive receipts, and this week found Wicked once again dominating TicketNews’s Top Broadway Events, Top Theater Events, and Top Combined Events rankings.

Work begins on gate near Bushes' Dallas home

Construction is under way on the security gate in George and Laura Bush's Preston Hollow neighborhood, and the former president is going to pay the tab – although the cost is unclear.

The project comes about six months after the Bushes moved into their newly renovated home and made visible efforts to become part of the neighborhood.

They took Barney on walks – and picked up after him. They visited students at nearby Pershing Elementary School. They posed for pictures with Boy Scouts.

Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, gestured as he drove his Lincoln Town Car around his billion-dollar stadium with the sloping glass exterior that reflects the colors of the sky, his team and his eyes.

He pointed out the views of the field and the gargantuan, 72-by-160-foot dual video screens fans will discover as they approach the gates. He explained how the retractable glass end zone doors were designed to slide away and — in mere minutes — allow in the Texas air.

Newsweek names HPHS among best in U.S.

Highland Park High School is listed this month among the top high schools in the nation by Newsweek magazine. Newsweek includes HPHS, ranked number 23, for its students' participation on Advanced Placement exams.

This is the sixth year Highland Park High School has made Newsweek's "Top 100" listing. HPHS is the highest ranked comprehensive high school in Texas, outscored only by magnet and charter campuses.

Newsweek's article, "America's Best High Schools," compiled a listing of 1,500 high schools, with public schools ranked according to a ratio that divides the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests taken schoolwide by the number of graduating seniors in the school.

Using that ratio, Highland Park High School scored a 6.108, up from 6.035 in 2008, and 5.727 in 2007.

"We are excited to be named to Newsweek's list of the best high schools in America once again," said HPHS Principal Patrick Cates. "This recognition validates the work our students and teachers do every year in our Advanced Placement program. Our program is one of the largest in the country, and we believe that it prepares students for success in any college or university anywhere. This ranking brings honor to our school, our school district, and our communities."

Going Modern in Texas

Some residential suburban communities insist on tiled roofs; others dictate color palettes and lot sizes. Often, the goal is to capture the look of a time in the past, before modern living and high housing costs changed tastes and materials.

But a small number of new developments is taking the opposite tack. Here, buried amongst a middle-class community and near the Central Expressway, is a street where the construction of Colonials and Tudors is expressly forbidden. Even mid-century modern is considered passé. "Make no mistake. It's a dictatorship and I make the rules," project developer Diane Cheatham says half-jokingly.

The result is Urban Reserve, a 13-acre development devoted to contemporary design. Pass a neighborhood of standard issue brick tract ranches and turn onto Vanguard Way and suddenly one confronts what looks like scene from a science fiction movie.

Bridge Damaged By Tanker Fire Must Be Replaced

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― The traffic tie-ups at U.S. 175 and State Highway 310 are going to continue for some time.

The southbound lanes of 310 at 175 were closed by Sunday's fiery tanker truck explosion and fire.

Monday, Texas Department of Transportation officials inspected the bridge for damage. They say the bridge is so heavily damaged it must be demolished and replaced. That means the bridge will be closed indefinitely -- possibly for as long as six months.

The Dallas-Fort Worth area came off best in the latest forecast of future home values.

North Texas metro areas were ranked as the least likely in the country to experience a sustained home-price decline in mortgage insurance giant PMI Group's newest report.

The D-FW area has less than a 1 percent chance of having lower home prices in two years, according to PMI Group's risk study.

Dallas North Tollway tolls increase at Wycliff Avenue gate today

The North Texas Tollway Authority is raising tolls at the Wycliff Avenue gate of the Dallas North Tollway to make them consistent with those at other toll booths.

Starting today, tolls will go up a dime to 70 cents for TollTag customers and a quarter to $1 for other motorists, the authority said.

The tolls had been lower because of construction between Lemmon Avenue and Interstate 35E. Wycliff Avenue sits in the middle of the construction, which just ended.

Krum's Michael Wilkes was crowned king off the corny dog eaters when he consumed 12 Fletcher's Corny Dogs in 10 minutes at the State Fair of Texas over the weekend. In 2007, Wilkes tied with Brent Ricord, of Keller, for the honor. This year Ricord managed to stuff down 11 corny dogs -- but that was only good enough for second place. Third place was a three-way tie between dog gobblers John Bradford, Carlos Gomez and Jacob Freeby.

For the past 14 years, Dallas Fire and Rescue managed the 911 call center. But, starting Wednesday, the Police Department will start taking over operations.

Luxury retailer Neiman Marcus said its same-store sales fell 2.4 percent in June.

The Dallas-based retailer’s clientele is much more sensitive to declines in the stock market, than to gasoline or food prices, and wealth certainly took a hit last month.

Declines in the stock market and layoffs in the high-paying finance sector are starting to have an effect on the company’s results. Neiman Marcus has reported declines in same-store sales in three out of the last six months.

Nearly 100 Luxury Townhomes Planned in Dallas Suburb

Taking advantage of available land in the heart of the 11th fastest-growing county in the nation, NDC Capital Partners L.L.C. has partnered with Lexington Luxury Builders to develop almost 100 luxury town home units in the downtown of the Dallas suburb of Plano, Texas.

No financials on the project were disclosed. The project, with 98 townhomes planned, will be known as Lexington Park at Rice Field. The site is where Plano's first high school football stadium had been.
